3rd "1000 km of Sardinia" (from 19 to 26 April 2008)

We are now at the 3rd edition of the"1000 km of Sardinia" which, after the exceptional case of 2007 where the cyclists wanted to win the right to participate in the Paris-Brest-Paris, we are going back to our original formula: the randonneurs will ride alongside the "Giro of Sardinia".
Once again, for the whole week we will have the honour of Fermo Rigamonti (the greatest expert in Italy of long distance events) who will personally organise this event from the point of view of the rules.
For 2008, however, we have planned a new formula which seems to us much more interesting and which allows you to do exactly 1000k in the week while at the same time completing two Granfondo races and so finishing up with a real fancy program!
You start on Sunday 20 April with the "Granfondo Sardegna" together with the racers (…but my advice is this: always keep in the spirit of the randonneur!!) after which you do two long rides followed by a rest day.
But will you fail to take advantage of the privilege of having a hotel just two kilometres from the port of S.Teresa di Gallura with Corsica just a step away?
Obviously not; and so for the day after the rest day, the randonneurs will take the first ferry crossing the Straits of Bonifacio to get onto French soil; they will make a long trek round Corsica and then return just in time for dinner! They will finish up the week of cycling on Friday 25th with the "Granfondo CostaSmeralda".
It is possible to sign up just for one or more of the rides but those who want to win the final certificate of the "1,000 km. Of Sardinia" must pedal the whole program doing both of the Granfondos, which isn't so easy!
This is a unique opportunity to put yourself to the test in an event which each will keep amongst his most treasured memories because the roads we ride on are extraordinarily beautiful and the fusion with the Giro is a really good way of cycling freely but alongside having a support infrastructure for the checks, feeding stations, ambulances, broom wagon etc.
Furthermore, the event on Sardinian soil can be carried over to the super-event on the mainland: whose who finish the whole program for the "1000 km of Sardinia" can participate (because they are directed entitled) in the "1.001 miglia Italia" which will be battled out on the randonn่e formula in August 2008.
Here is a photo of the group of 2007 randonneurs at Orosei, before they set off for the ride of 400 km.

THE PROGRAM FOR THE WEEK   (* * ^ T O P ^ * *)

Saturday 19 April: arrival in the hotel

Total Kilometres of the "1000 km. of Sardinia": km 1000 - Overall climbing: m 7.595 or 8.845
For the randonneurs of the "1,000 km" too, the same rules for the travel apply as for those in the Giro and so their arrival is planned for Saturday afternoon and the hotel services will start with the dinner on Saturday evening and staying on Saturday night, alling them to do all the pre-race organisation on that day (the race number, the road book etc).
The entry for the two Granfondos is included in the price of entry to the 1,000km where you can participate in the "randonneur" style and their rules (free start "in the French style", no limits on the time taken etc) but you can also ask for a chip to check your time in the two races; in this case you must be in possession of a membership card allowing race participation (FCI, UISP,UDACE, etc.); in any case, the race number for those in the race will be easily recongisable and will be valid both for the long rides and for the two Granfondos.
The start and finish of the rides are all in the centre of the Villaggio "La Marmorata".

Sunday 20 April: "Granfondo Sardegna" - see the programme of the event itself -
Overall distance: km 146 - Overall climbing: m 2.535

Whether you decide to go without a chip so a free start "in the French style" or do the race with the others, you have to do the Red route of the GranGiro which goes along the coast almost as far as Castelsardo and then go inland towards the mountains (so tackling the most difficult section of the day) and then returning to the seaside of Santa Teresa di Gallura.
Monday 21 April: "Brevetto Sardegna n.1" " - Start: at 06.30
Overall distance: km. 270 - Overall climbing: m. 1.420
This is a long and easy ride along the whole north coast, passing through Porto Torres, to arrive at the splendid "La Pelosa" beach at Stintino from where you turn and come back on the same route. It will only be really difficult if there is a maestral wind which, in the Bay of Bonifacio can blow really strongly
Tuesday 22 April: "Brevetto Sardegna n.2" " - Start at 06.30
Overall distance: km 204 - Overall climbing: m 1.200
You will discover the east coast of Sardinia. From the Village, pass through Arzachena, you reach Olbia and go down the Sard East Coast Road (l'Orientale Sarda -SS125) as far as S.Teodoro and at Budoni you turn back having seen the beaches and the beautiful views of Agrustos and Porto d'Ottiolu.       It is a mostly flat stage (but in Sardinia a "flat stage" usually means a route with deep gorges!) which you will manage easily …. If there isn't a headwind!
Wednesday 23 April: Rest A rest day so you can refresh yourself and regain your strength to tackle the last part of the week Thursday 24 April - "Brevetto Corsica" - Start at 06.30
Overall distance km 210 - Overall climbing: m 350 oppure m 1.600
All leave together to take the first ferry which crosses the Bay of Bonifacio and which gets to Corsica after 40 minutes. Once on French soil, there are two possible routes, both of 210 km
- Go north always hugging the coast passing through Porto Vecchio, Solenzara and Ghisonaccia till you reach Aleria where you turn round and come back to the start at the ferry port of Bonifacio. This route is practically all flat and allows you to make short "tourist" excursions along the coast (Gulf of Santa Giulia, beach at Palombaggia, Gulf of Pinarellu, visit the town of Porto Vecchio, beaches and salt marshes on the coast etc.)
- OR Go north as far as Solenzara and then climb inland into the mountains; you climb on a beautiful road until you reach Col de Bavella (1218 m.) and then come down from there first to Zonza and then go as far as Sartene riding on lonely roads with hardly any traffic. You come back to Bonifacio riding on the road which goes up and down from Ajaccio along the panoramic south coast road. This option lets you see really beautiful and varied landscapes but the climbing is more pronounced with the hardest part the climb up to the Col di Bavella which you face in the middle of the stage.
Whichever choice you make, in any case remember that the last ferry doesn't wait for latecomers! Given the special circumstances of the day and the structure of the route, the organisers will make available one or two support cars which will act as control points and moving rest stops.
N.B.- the cost of the ferry is NOT included in the booking price and is up to each participant to pay at the time
Friday 25 April: "Granfondo CostaSmeralda- see the programme of the event itself -
Overall distance: km 170 - Overall climbing: m 2.090
You are participating in the "most beautiful Granfondo in the world" knowing that your eyes will be filled with the most splendid sea views! The route to do, of course, is the Red route of the GranGiro; so starting with the harshness of the inland and then continuing with the series of ups and downs of the coast.
You can start freely "in the French style" or race with the others.
Saturday 26 April - Rest
The last day is a rest day and you can watch the racers participating in the final time trial; in any case, your presence is obligatory in the afternoon at the final prize-giving so you can get up on the stage and receive the applause of those present.
Then you can go off to Olbia and take the night ferry for Livorno/Civitavecchia or wait till Sunday and go on the fast afternoon ferry.
